How to choose the perfect domain name for a startup

Sincerely, there are several ways to engage in the exercise of choosing a perfect domain name for your startup. However, I recommend 5 checklists every founder should pay attention to because these checklists were deduced from experience and an exclusive algorithm that combines machine learning with years of real market sales data to create a rock-solid starting point for future sales and negotiation.

These checklists include:

  • Memorable
  • Brandable
  • Short
  • Popular Keyword
  • Social Media Availability

Memorable

The first principle to pay attention to when picking a domain name is memorability. How memorable is your domain name? How often do you have to re-emphasize your domain name to a potential customer before it sticks? Once you can answer this question with a conviction, then you have figured out whether or not your domain name is memorable.

Brandable

Assuming you want your startup to seem cutting edge, a brandable domain name can help you achieve that. This is because brandable domain names aren’t limited by their relevance to your startup. They can be crafted from the ground up for maximum memorability.

Short

Research shows that the top 10,000 websites have just nine characters in the name of their domains. The rule of thumb here is to ensure your domain name does not go beyond 10 characters.

Keyword Oriented

Without mincing words, choosing a having a keyword-oriented domain definitely offers some plus points to your brandability and memorability of your preferred domain name. Besides, a brandable, memorable and keyword-oriented domain name helps in lead generation.

Social Media Availability

Consider this is a plus to the principles you should pay attention to when choosing a domain name. Assuming your preferred domain name handles is available on social media, that’s a big boost towards brandability. However, if the social media handles of the domain name are not available, a short variation should do.

This is where creativity comes in. For example, if your domain name is www.google.com, you could go for the social media handle “googleapp” assuming google is not available on social media.

In conclusion, while conforming to the principles highlighted in this lesson, this should by no means take away your creativity in choosing your preferred domain name.
